My previous portfolio website had a strong identity, but it felt heavy. Not heavy in the slow-loading sense, but visually heavy: too many colors, too much decoration, too many things competing for attention.
Seeing the problem
I sat down and looked at it honestly. There was a grain overlay, three ambient orbs, several accent colors used together. Every element had a reason to exist, but together they drowned each other out.
The content (projects, writing, identity) was buried under layers of decoration.
The decision to simplify
This redesign started from one principle: every element must have a job. If something doesn’t help communicate the content, it goes.
A controlled palette. Generous whitespace. Clear typography. Sharp, purposeful motion instead of animation for its own sake.
Speed as a feature
Astro with islands means pages load almost instantly. JavaScript loads only when needed. This isn’t mere technical optimization; it’s part of the experience. A fast website respects the visitor’s time.
What I learned
Rewriting something that already “works” is scary, but often necessary. The best version of a piece isn’t the busiest; it’s the one that communicates its intent most clearly.
